Tips to Help Your Child Learn Spanish This Year

  • Learn along with them and use it at home.  If you already know Spanish, speak the language at home.  For that matter, if you speak any other language, use that with them at home, too.

  • Show interest in the language by saying positive comments about the Spanish language and the Hispanic culture.

  • Encourage your child to watch movies and television shows in Spanish.  Subtitles are a big help!

  • Encourage your child to listen to Spanish music. Basho & Friends YouTube videos are highly recommended if your child is learning Spanish. For advanced speakers, Hispanic singers such as Carlos Vives, Juan Luis Guerra, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Alejandro Sanz, Marc Anthony, etc are recommended.  Ask them to play the Coros we are using in class, too.

  • Speak the language at home, if you know it.

  • Download Spanish apps on smartphones or tablets such as Duolingo and SpanishDict to practice the language.

  • Encourage your child to go to free foreign language websites to practice grammar and writing.  Look at the useful links page for our favorites.

  • Remind your child the several benefits of being a multilingual person.

  • Mistakes are part of the learning process, and he/she must be persistent and positive.  It is important to put their best effort no matter what!
